Little Hats Big Hearts Free Knit Hat Pattern

This is a free pattern.

Volunteers for the American Heart Association are celebrating American Heart Month by knitting red hats for all babies born in February at participating hospitals.  We’re raising awareness of heart disease, the number one killer of Americans, and congenital heart defects, the most common type of birth defect in the country.

They need your help for the 2016-2017 campaign! go to:

http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/Affiliate/Little-Hats-Big-Hearts_UCM_470829_SubHomePage.jsp

If you knit or crochet and would like to participate in Little Hats, Big Hearts™, please click on your state, or the state nearest you, for more information on how to volunteer.  If you do not see your state listed below, please send hats to the next closest state until we establish the program in your area.

Little Hats, Big Hearts™ started in February 2014 in Chicago, IL collecting 300 hats in the first year.  The program has now expanded to 29 states. We are thrilled to have so many volunteers interested in Little Hats, Big Hearts™!

Thank you for making this program so special and for helping to spread awareness of heart disease and congenital heart defects.

New Decorating Ideas with FREE Pattern!

 1. Before you felt your slippers take a different color of yarn and stitch around the top edge of slipper, for a colorful border.

2. After felting, stitch around the edge of your slipper with the yarn you used to make a decorative border.

3. Before you begin knitting the jute for your sole, roll it into a ball a few times, this will make it more flexible to work with.
 4. To make your summer slipper more of a ballet style, sew the upper at the first row instead of second.

5. If you want more of your toes covered add one to where you would place your upper, so if it's at stitch 6 place it at stitch 7 instead.

6. Add a button to decorate your slippers. Below is the pattern for the flower you can slip right over a 1/2" button!
Crochet flower pattern:

CH 6 link chain together to make circle
DC 20 around the circle using the center
DC 1 CH 4 in between every stitch
sew in all loose yarn
slip over button
all done!

Have fun decorating your slippers!

A Fun & Easy Way to Decorate your Slippers!

All you need is a finished pair of knitted slippers from one of my patterns (before felting) and a few pretty colors of wool yarn. I used leftover wool yarn from other projects.

Using a yarn needle, weave the yarn in and out, anywhere on your slippers you wish. This is your own design so be creative and have fun!

Once you are happy with the design you have created, go ahead and follow the felting instructions on your pattern. Now, this is the exciting part, you have to wait and see how it will turn out.
When you have your slippers felted to the correct size, trim off any yarn that did not felt. I used a little soap and warm water to just smooth down where I trimmed by rubbing it with my hand.
When my slippers were dry, I added a few buttons to complete my look. And I have to say for an experiment, I am pretty happy with the out come.

This is a fun and easy way to wet felt a technique on your slippers, that anyone can do! Be creative and have fun!

And as always, I am happy to share with you!
